Why teams leave Meltwater
- What it is: Media intelligence suite: news, social and broadcast monitoring, a media contacts database, influencer marketing and the Mira AI assistant (source).
- Owner: Private since 2023, owned by an entity jointly controlled by Marlin Equity Partners and Altor; delisted from the Oslo Stock Exchange (source).
- Plans: Starter, Pro, Enterprise and Agency, all quoted after a demo (source).
No published prices, and a 12-month minimum. Meltwater uses tailored pricing and says most agreements are annual, with a minimum term of 12 months and possible onboarding fees. You find out the price after a demo and commit for a year before you know the tool fits.
You pay for a bundle you may only half use. Social listening, the media contacts database and influencer marketing are priced as additions to media monitoring. A team that only needs one of those still buys into the suite.
A steep learning curve. PR users describe the monitoring as clunky and complicated, with training needed before it is useful. Boolean searches have to be built and maintained to keep results clean.
Sales pressure. The most common complaint in PR communities is not the product but the sales process: repeated calls and follow-ups before and after a demo.
Users say the same thing in public. Six posts from Reddit, X and LinkedIn:

Meltwater's media monitoring is a mess. Complicated and clunky, and I didn't have the time to do a million classes on the program.

Meltwater's sales tactics are horrible, enough to avoid them. depending where you are, you should also consider Cision or Truescope for monitoring

Brand24 and Meltwater couldn't close that gap. They look for brand mentions inside a closed list of sites, so they miss the trail of a specific article, placements that appear and then vanish, and republications with a partly changed title.

How much does Meltwater cost?
Meltwater does not publish prices. Every plan is quoted after a demo, and the figures below come from Meltwater's own pricing page and from Vendr's purchase data.
- Median contract: About $25,800 a year (roughly $2,150 a month), across 126 purchases (source).
- Range: $5,375 to $56,993 a year in Vendr's data; buyers negotiated about 15% off on average (source).
- What drives the price: Media monitoring is the base. Social listening, the media contacts database and influencer marketing are priced as additions to it (source).
- Plans: Starter, Pro, Enterprise and Agency. API and MCP integrations are listed on Enterprise, and the MCP server needs a separate add-on (source).
- Term: Most agreements are annual with a 12-month minimum; complex setups may carry a one-time onboarding fee (source).
- Free trial: None. Meltwater offers a guided demo instead of a self-serve trial (source).
What we checked for in every alternative
Seven checks, each one a column in the table below. Prices, API and MCP availability were checked on each vendor's own site in October 2026. We make SnitchFeed, so it is on the list; it is only the pick where its narrower focus is the right fit.
- 01
Starting price
The lowest published price for a plan that does real monitoring. Quote-only vendors are marked as such; where we cite contract data, it is Vendr purchase data and labelled that way.
- 02
Term
Whether you can pay monthly, or have to sign an annual contract before you know the tool works for you.
- 03
Platforms
Which sources the tool covers: social networks, news, broadcast, print and podcasts. Meltwater's strength is earned media, so this column matters most for PR teams.
- 04
Data access
Whether you can get your data out (exports, reports, history) and whether a media contacts database is included.
- 05
AI scoring and tagging
Whether the tool ranks or labels mentions for you (relevance, intent, sentiment), or leaves you to read every match.
- 06
API
Whether you can pull data into your own systems, and on which plan.
- 07
MCP
Whether the vendor offers an official MCP server, so AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT can query your data directly. Community-built servers do not count.

For startups and B2B teams
If you bought Meltwater mainly to catch mentions of your brand and competitors online, a narrower tool does that job without the PR suite.
1. SnitchFeed: Best Meltwater alternative for startups and B2B teams tracking buying intent
SnitchFeed watches Reddit, X, LinkedIn, Bluesky and Hacker News for posts that mention your brand, your competitors, or the problem you solve, then tells you which ones are worth acting on and helps you act.
Key features
- AI relevance scoring and intent tags . Every match gets a relevance score and tags such as buying intent, seeking an alternative, competitor complaint or recommendation request, so you work the top of the list instead of reading everything.
- Sentiment on every mention . Positive, negative or neutral, so complaints about you or a competitor stand out.
- Alerts where your team works . Slack, Discord or email: in real time for Reddit and Bluesky, and as often as every hour for X, LinkedIn and Hacker News.
- AI reply drafts . One click drafts a reply grounded in your product and written in your voice. You edit it and post it yourself.
- Automations with webhooks . Push every scored mention into Clay, Zapier, Make, n8n or your CRM as soon as it is found (Pro).
- API and MCP for your agents . Pull mentions into your own tools, or let Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor query them and manage listeners.
- Boolean keyword queries . AND, OR, NOT and exact phrases keep out unrelated meanings before they reach your team.
