  • AND, OR, NOT, "exact phrases" and brackets, plus whole-word matching
  • Up to 50 posts and 50 comments per search, newest first
  • 3 free searches a day; NSFW subreddits are not included

How to search Reddit

Reddit's own search box sits at the top of every page. Type your words, then pick a results type: Posts, Communities, Comments, Media or People. The Comments type searches what people said inside threads, not just post titles, which is where most recommendations and complaints live. To stay inside one community, open the subreddit and search from there, or add subreddit:name to your search.

Posts can be sorted by Relevance, Hot, Top, New or Comment Count, and filtered to the past hour, day, week, month, year or all time. Comments sort by Relevance, Top or New. One quirk worth knowing: post results only need some of your words, but comment results must contain every word you typed. For a multi-word filter, wrap it in quotes, like title:"kitten gif". Reddit also has an Ask button next to the search box, which writes an AI answer from posts and comments instead of listing them.

How to search Reddit comments

To search comments across Reddit, run a search and switch the results type to Comments. Every word you type must appear in the comment, so start with two or three words and add more only if you get too many results.

To search the comments of one thread, open the post: in the Reddit app, tap the search icon at the top of the post; on desktop, use the search bar by the comments section, below the comment box. Your browser's find shortcut (Ctrl+F, or Cmd+F on a Mac) also works, but only on comments that are already loaded on the page.

The tool above searches comments and posts together, so a word that appears only deep in a thread still shows up, with the matching part of the comment shown and highlighted.

How to search Reddit by user

Add author:username to a Reddit search to find posts that user submitted, for example author:reddit search. Reddit's author: filter matches posts, not comments. To find a user's comments, open their profile (reddit.com/user/name) and choose the Comments tab. Users can hide some or all of their activity from their profile with Reddit's Curate your profile setting, so a profile isn't always a complete list.

In the tool above, type one to three names in the Usernames box along with your keywords. It returns that person's public posts and comments from the last 14 days that match, across every subreddit. Names must match Reddit's capitals exactly.

Reddit search operators

Reddit's search understands these filters. Type them straight into the search box, with no space after the colon.

OperatorWhat it doesExample
subreddit:Only results from one subredditsubreddit:SaaS pricing
author:Only posts submitted by one userauthor:reddit

flair:Posts with a given link flairflair:question
self:Text posts only (true) or not (false)self:true
AND, OR, NOTCombine or exclude words (in capitals)crm NOT salesforce

How to search Reddit with Google

Many people skip Reddit's search and use Google instead. Add site:reddit.com to any Google search to keep results on Reddit, or site:reddit.com/r/SaaS for one subreddit. Google ranks older, popular threads well, but it can take days to index new posts and it rarely surfaces individual comments. Check the URLs in your results: when nothing matches, Google may show pages from other sites instead.

Other free Reddit search tools

This tool covers the last 14 days. For older threads, these free tools search Reddit archives that go back years:

  • PullPush: searches archived Reddit posts and comments by keyword, username, subreddit, date and score.
  • Arctic Shift: searches archived posts and comments by subreddit, author, date and text.
  • Google with site:reddit.com: best for popular threads from any year.

Get alerts instead of searching every day

If you run the same search often, save it once in SnitchFeed's Reddit monitoring and get new matching posts and comments in Slack, Discord or email as they're posted, each scored for relevance. How do I search Reddit?
Type your words into the search box at the top of Reddit, then pick a results type: Posts, Communities, Comments, Media or People. Use the Comments type to search what people said inside threads. This tool searches posts and comments together and highlights your keywords in each result.
How do I search Reddit comments?
On Reddit, run a search and switch the results type to Comments. Comment results must contain every word you typed, so start with two or three words. This tool searches comments from the last 14 days across all of Reddit, alongside posts, and shows the matching part of each comment.
How do I search comments in a Reddit thread?
Open the post. In the Reddit app, tap the search icon at the top of the post. On desktop, use the search bar by the comments section, below the comment box. Your browser's find shortcut (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F) also works on comments already loaded on the page.
How do I search a user's comments on Reddit?
Open their profile at reddit.com/user/name and choose the Comments tab, though users can hide activity from their profile. In this tool, type the username in the Usernames box along with your keywords to find their matching public posts and comments from the last 14 days, across every subreddit.
How do I search Reddit by user?
Add author:username to a Reddit search, with no space after the colon, for example author:reddit. It returns posts submitted by that user, not comments. To include comments, use the Usernames box in this tool.
How do I search a specific subreddit?
Open the subreddit and search from its page, or add subreddit:name to your search, for example subreddit:SaaS pricing. In this tool, type up to 5 subreddit names in the Subreddits box, with the same capitals as on Reddit.
Does Reddit search support AND, OR and NOT?
Yes, in capitals. cats AND dogs needs both words, cats OR dogs needs either, and cats NOT dogs leaves out results with the second word. Use brackets to group, like hedgehog NOT (sonic OR shadow). This tool supports the same operators plus "exact phrases".
How do I search Reddit post titles only?
Use title: followed by your word, for example title:alternative. Wrap multi-word searches in quotes, like title:"kitten gif".
Why can't Reddit search find a post I know exists?
Comment searches only return comments that contain every word you typed, so try fewer words. Sorting by Relevance can also bury new posts, so sort by New. If it still doesn't show up, search with Google using site:reddit.com and your words.
How do I search Reddit with Google?
Add site:reddit.com to a Google search, or site:reddit.com/r/name for one subreddit. Google is good for older, popular threads, but it can take days to index new posts and rarely shows individual comments.
How far back does this Reddit search tool go?
The last 14 days, across every subreddit. NSFW subreddits are excluded. For older threads, use the Run on Reddit or Search on Google buttons, which open the same search there, or an archive such as PullPush or Arctic Shift.
Can this tool find deleted Reddit posts?
Sometimes. If a post or comment was made in the last 14 days and deleted after SnitchFeed collected it, it still appears here, though the Reddit link will show it as deleted. For older content, archives such as PullPush and Arctic Shift cover years of Reddit.
Is this Reddit search tool free?
Yes. You get 3 searches a day with no account, each returning up to 50 posts and 50 comments. To search more, or to get new matches as alerts, start a 7-day free trial of SnitchFeed.
Can I get alerts when something new is posted on Reddit?
Yes. Save the search in SnitchFeed's Reddit monitoring and new matching posts and comments are sent to Slack, Discord or email, each scored for relevance.
