Why teams leave Google Alerts
- What it is: Free keyword alerts from Google, delivered by email or RSS.
- Owner: Google.
It does not watch social platforms. Google Alerts only reports pages that Google's search index picks up. It has no direct connection to Reddit, X or LinkedIn, so the threads where people ask for recommendations or complain about a product arrive late or not at all.
Noise on any name that is not unique. There is no relevance scoring, only a choice between "Only the best results" and "All results". If your brand shares a word or an acronym with anything else, the alert fills up with matches you have to read and discard by hand.
Alerts can go quiet without telling you. There is no dashboard showing what an alert found or missed. When an alert stops triggering, the first sign is usually a mention you heard about somewhere else.
Email or RSS, and nothing else. No Slack, no webhooks, no API and no export. If you want mentions in a team channel, a CRM or an AI agent, Google Alerts cannot get them there.
Users say the same thing in public. Six posts from Reddit, X and LinkedIn:

I haven't been able to use new Google alerts: they never trigger. But I have a couple older Google alerts that work fine. Go figure.

Post on picking a company name
I set Google Alerts for companies I’m involved with so I can track news and help when needed. But when the name is generic, the alert becomes pure noise. So I just turn it off.

Imagine if Google Alerts was a great, highly accurate bit of software instead of a mystifyingly broken one.

Post on tracking media coverage
Google Scholar misses impact. Google Alerts misses media. I often have no idea where stories citing me travel.

But when your company’s acronym is identical to a resort chain and a bunch of academic institutions, standard Google Alerts quickly turn into a useless wall of noise. We were spending hours manually sifting through false positives just to find actual news.

Most organisers hear about a competitor's move after it's already public. By then it's not intelligence. It's news. ... None of that shows up in a Google Alert.

Is Google Alerts free?
Yes. Google Alerts has no paid tier and no upsell. The cost of staying on it is coverage and control, not money: what it watches, how much noise it sends, and where the results can go.
- Price: Free, with no paid plan (source).
- Account: Managing alerts needs a Google Account, but the account can use any email address, not only Gmail (source).
- Delivery: Email, or an RSS feed per alert (source).
- Frequency: As it happens, at most once a day, or at most once a week (source).
- Sources: News, blogs, web, video, books, discussions and finance, with a choice of "Only the best results" or "All results" (source).
- API: None; Google has not published one for Alerts.
What we checked for in every alternative
Seven checks, each one a column in the table below. Prices, API and MCP availability were checked on each vendor's own site in October 2026. We make SnitchFeed, so it is on the list; it is only the pick where its narrower focus is the right fit.
- 01
Starting price
The lowest published price for a plan that does real monitoring, including free plans. Quote-only vendors are marked as such; we never guess a list price.
- 02
Term
Whether you can pay monthly, or have to commit to a year before you know the tool is better than the free option you already have.
- 03
Platforms
Which sources the tool actually watches. Google Alerts is strong on news and the web; the gap most people want to close is Reddit, X, LinkedIn and communities.
- 04
Data access
Where alerts go (email, RSS, Slack, webhooks) and whether you can export or search what was found.
- 05
AI scoring and tagging
Whether the tool ranks or labels mentions for you (relevance, intent, sentiment), or sends every match for you to read.
- 06
API
Whether you can pull results into your own systems, and on which plan. Google Alerts has none.
- 07
MCP
Whether the vendor offers an official MCP server, so AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT can query your data directly. Community-built servers do not count.

For startups and B2B teams watching social conversations
Paid tools that cover the places Google Alerts cannot see: Reddit, X, LinkedIn, Hacker News and developer communities.
1. SnitchFeed: Best Google Alerts alternative for startups and B2B teams that need Reddit, X, LinkedIn and Hacker News
SnitchFeed watches Reddit, X, LinkedIn, Bluesky and Hacker News for posts that mention your brand, your competitors, or the problem you solve, then tells you which ones are worth acting on and helps you act. It covers the conversations Google Alerts cannot see.
Key features
- AI relevance scoring and intent tags . Every match gets a relevance score and tags such as buying intent, seeking an alternative, competitor complaint or recommendation request, so a generic keyword does not bury you in noise.
- Sentiment on every mention . Positive, negative or neutral, so complaints about you or a competitor stand out.
- Alerts where your team works . Slack, Discord or email: in real time for Reddit and Bluesky, and as often as every hour for X, LinkedIn and Hacker News.
- AI reply drafts . One click drafts a reply grounded in your product and written in your voice. You edit it and post it yourself.
- Automations with webhooks . Push every scored mention into Clay, Zapier, Make, n8n or your CRM as soon as it is found (Pro).
- API and MCP for your agents . Pull mentions into your own tools, or let Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor query them and manage listeners.
- Boolean keyword queries . AND, OR, NOT and exact phrases keep out unrelated meanings before they reach your team.
