Can ChatGPT do social listening?

Not on its own. ChatGPT can search the web, summarise what it finds and, on paid plans, repeat a search every hour. But it only sees pages its search can reach, it cannot read X at all, and it keeps no history of your mentions. Connect it to a social listening tool and it can search, summarise and act on every post the tool collects.

By Parth Koshti, founder of SnitchFeed. Updated October 2026.

The short version: AI is very good at the reading part of social listening and poor at the collecting part. Deciding which posts matter, what each one wants and what a hundred of them add up to is what language models do well. Seeing every new post on Reddit, X and LinkedIn as it appears needs a tool connected to each platform. This page covers what ChatGPT and the other assistants can do today, what they can't, and how to use them for listening.

What ChatGPT can do for social listening

From OpenAI's own documentation, checked October 21, 2026.

  • Search the web for recent posts

ChatGPT search looks up public pages and cites them. Ask what people are saying about a product and it returns a summary with links, from the pages its search can reach.

  • Repeat a search on a schedule

Scheduled tasks re-run a prompt and notify you by push or email. Paid plans can run a task at most once an hour, and each plan caps active tasks (5 on Plus, 15 on Pro).

    Source: OpenAI: scheduled tasks
  • Analyse posts you give it

Paste threads or upload a CSV of mentions and it will tag sentiment, group posts by theme, pull out complaints and feature requests, and write the summary.

  • Draft replies

Give it a post and some context about your product and it writes a reply you can edit. Useful, as long as a person decides what gets posted.

What ChatGPT can't do

These are the parts of social listening that need a data source, not a better model.

  • Collect every matching post

Search returns what ranks for your question, not every post that contains your keywords. A listening tool checks each new post on a platform against your query, so a comment under a three-day-old thread still reaches you.

  • Read X

X's robots.txt blocks every crawler except Google's, Bing's and Meta's, including OpenAI's and Anthropic's. ChatGPT and Claude search cannot read X posts.

    Source: x.com/robots.txt
  • Watch a platform continuously

A scheduled task is a repeated search, at most hourly, not a feed. ChatGPT's event triggers cover Gmail, Slack and GitHub, not Reddit, X or LinkedIn.

    Source: OpenAI: scheduled tasks
  • Keep a history of your mentions

Each answer starts from scratch. With no stored mentions there is no volume over time, no share of voice against competitors and no way to see what changed this month.

What about Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity?

The same pattern, with one exception: Grok, built by xAI, can search public X posts.

What AI does well in social listening

AI social listening means the reading is done by a model. This is where it earns its place.

  • Relevance scoring

Keywords match far more posts than you want. When we counted public mentions of Magnolia Bakery on Reddit and X, there were more than 3,000 a day and about 35 worth reading. A model reading each post is what gets you from one number to the other.

    AI scoring and tags
  • Intent tagging

Telling a recommendation request apart from a complaint, a comparison or praise. For B2B teams this is the difference between a lead and a mention.

    Buying signals
  • Sentiment

Positive, negative or neutral on every post, so you can see whether a spike in volume is good news or bad.

    Sentiment analysis
  • Summaries and reports

Turning a week of mentions into the five things that matter. The useful ones link every point back to the posts it came from, so you can check it.

  • Writing queries

Describing what you want in plain language and getting a Boolean query back, which you then test against real posts before saving.

    Boolean search
  • Reply drafts

A first draft that matches the thread and your product, for a person to edit and post.

    AI reply drafts

One rule for all of it: an AI summary is only as good as the posts behind it. Use tools that link every insight back to the posts it came from, and read a sample before you act on a trend.

How to use ChatGPT or Claude for social listening

Three setups, from free to complete.

  1. 1 ChatGPT or Claude on its own

Free or cheap, nothing to set up. Good for a one-off look at what people are saying.

Limits: Only what search can reach, no X, no history, and a scheduled task re-runs a search rather than watching a platform.

    Example prompt
Every morning, search for new public posts from the last 24 hours where someone asks for a tool like [your product]. List each one with a link and one line on what they need.
  2. 2 With data you export

The assistant is good at analysis, so give it the data. Export mentions from any listening tool as a CSV and ask for themes, sentiment and complaints.

Limits: Manual, and only as fresh as your last export.

    Example prompt
Here are last month's mentions as a CSV. Group them by theme, give me the five most common complaints with two example posts each, and tell me what changed from the month before.
  3. 3 With a listening tool connected

The tool collects every matching post as it appears; the assistant searches, summarises and acts on them when you ask. Connection is through MCP, a standard way for assistants to use other software.

Limits: Needs a listening tool with an MCP server, and an assistant plan that allows custom connections.

    Example prompt
Find posts from this week where people ask for an alternative to [competitor]. Rank them by how ready they look to buy, and draft a reply for the top three.

Social listening tools that work with ChatGPT and Claude

A tool works with an assistant when it publishes an MCP server. Besides SnitchFeed, the ones with an official server (from each vendor's own documentation, checked October 21, 2026) are Meltwater, Sprinklr, Hootsuite (Lumen, powered by Talkwalker), Brand24, Octolens, Mentionlytics, Agorapulse, Syften and KWatch.io. Most put it on higher plans or sell it as an add-on (Brand24's is on Pro and above). Sprout Social's works in ChatGPT only and covers TikTok data, not listening. We found none for Brandwatch, Mention, Awario or YouScan.

Plans, prices and what each server can do are compared in social listening APIs and MCP servers. For the wider market, see the best social listening tools.

SnitchFeed in ChatGPT and Claude

SnitchFeed is real-time social listening for B2B teams. It collects the posts, and your assistant does the asking. It watches Reddit and Bluesky in real time and checks LinkedIn, X (Twitter) and Hacker News as often as hourly, scores every post for relevance, and tags intent and sentiment.

  • An official MCP server on every plan. Sign in once with OAuth, no API keys. Works in Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, Windsurf, OpenAI Codex and Antigravity. In ChatGPT, custom MCP apps need developer mode, which depends on your ChatGPT plan.
  • Read and run, not just search. An assistant can find mentions, test and create listeners, change where alerts go and run analytics. It asks for confirmation before deleting anything.
  • Snitch AI, built in. If you would rather not connect anything, the agent inside SnitchFeed does the same on every plan.
Claude Claude Code ChatGPT Cursor Windsurf OpenAI Codex Antigravity

It does not cover Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, news or print, and it keeps months of history, not years.

Can ChatGPT do social listening?
Not on its own. ChatGPT can search the web and, on paid plans, run a scheduled search as often as hourly and notify you. But it only sees pages its search can reach (X blocks OpenAI's crawler entirely), it does not collect every matching post, and it keeps no history of your mentions, so it cannot show trends. Connected to a listening tool through MCP, it can search, summarise and act on your mentions when you ask.
Can ChatGPT monitor social media for my brand?
Partly. A scheduled task can search for your brand once an hour on a paid plan and notify you about what it finds. It will miss posts its search cannot reach, including everything on X, and comments that do not rank. For complete monitoring you need a tool that checks every new post against your keywords.
Can ChatGPT search Reddit?
ChatGPT search can return public Reddit pages that its search reaches, and OpenAI has had a data partnership with Reddit since May 2024. OpenAI does not document real-time Reddit search, subreddit filters or alerts in ChatGPT, so treat it as a way to look things up, not to monitor Reddit.
Can ChatGPT read posts on X (Twitter)?
No. X's robots.txt blocks every crawler except Google's, Bing's and Meta's, so ChatGPT search cannot read X. Grok, which is built by xAI, can search public X posts.
Can ChatGPT alert me when someone mentions my brand?
Only through a scheduled task, which re-runs a search at most once an hour on paid plans and notifies you by push or email. Each plan caps how many tasks can be active. It is a repeated search, not an alert on each new post.
What is AI social listening?
Social listening where AI does the reading: scoring each post for relevance, tagging intent and sentiment, summarising patterns and drafting replies. The collecting is still done by a tool connected to each platform. See what social listening is.
How can AI be used for social listening?
To filter keyword matches down to the posts that matter, to tag them by intent and sentiment, to summarise a week of mentions, to turn a plain-language request into a Boolean query, and to draft replies. Through MCP, an assistant like ChatGPT or Claude can also search and manage a listening tool for you.
Which social listening tools work with ChatGPT or Claude?
Tools with an MCP server. SnitchFeed includes one on every plan. Meltwater, Sprinklr, Hootsuite (Talkwalker), Brand24, Octolens, Mentionlytics, Agorapulse, Syften and KWatch.io also publish official MCP servers, most on higher plans. See the full comparison of social listening APIs and MCP servers.
Can Claude do social listening?
The same answer as ChatGPT. Claude has web search on every plan and scheduled tasks on paid plans, and X blocks Anthropic's crawler too. Claude's strength is connections: custom connectors work on every plan, so it can use a listening tool's MCP server directly.
Is AI sentiment analysis accurate?
Good on clear posts, weaker on sarcasm, jokes and posts that mention several brands. Read a sample of each label before you trust a trend, and prefer tools that show the post behind every score.
Does social listening AI listen to private conversations?
No. Social listening tools read public posts and comments. Private messages, closed groups and anything behind a login are not part of it.
