Magnolia Bakery Has No Store in San Francisco. It Has a Thread of People Looking for One.

A brand as well known as Magnolia Bakery generates about 35 public text mentions a week, which is few enough for one person to read. Most of the useful ones are not opinions about the product at all. They are people naming a city where they cannot buy it. That second fact is the one worth building a workflow around, and it is not what social listening is usually sold to do.

Last week I argued on X that social listening doesn't work for B2C. My exact words were that in B2C you get thousands of low-intent mentions, and in B2B maybe six a week that actually matter.

Then I counted.

I took Magnolia Bakery, the NYC bakery from the Sex and the City cupcake scene and the banana pudding, roughly as famous as a bakery gets, and counted every public mention of the name across Reddit and X.

Seventeen a week on Reddit. Seventeen a week on X. About 35 in total.

Thirty-five a week is not a firehose. One person could read all of it over coffee. I was wrong about the volume, and being wrong about the volume meant I was wrong about the use case.

One note on method, because that number is doing a lot of work. A phrase search returned 19 Reddit comments across 8 days and 12 X posts across 5 days, both roughly 2.4 a day. Both platforms truncate their own search results, and the count excludes misspellings, unquoted variants, handle mentions, and every post that describes the product without naming the brand. Neither platform enforces quoted phrases strictly either, so some of what it caught is a word intersection rather than the exact name. So 35 is a floor with soft edges rather than a census. The conclusion survives either way, because the honest range is tens a week, not thousands.

What's actually in the thirty-five

Not brand sentiment. Geography.

"Here are things I desperately want to try but I live in Canada and they won't ship to me: -Milk Bar Birthday Cake […] -Magnolia Bakery Banana Pudding"

r/Cooking, 89 votes

"I wish Williamsburg had a really good cupcake shop that made banana pudding like Magnolia Bakery"

r/williamsburg

"Well we have and this is the closest we can get out in the desert. If I had a way to get the puddin' you're referring to, I would absolutely take it."

r/vegas

Each one is a person naming a place where the product isn't and they want it to be. Not a rating. Not a vibe. A coordinate.

Three signal types account for most of the useful volume, and none of them is a rating.

Geographic gap. Someone names a city or country where the product isn't sold and says they want it there. On Reddit this reads as a wish rather than a complaint, which is exactly why sentiment scoring files it as neutral and ignores it. The Canada, Williamsburg and Vegas comments above are all geographic gaps.

Substitution request. Someone in a market with no store asks the local community where to buy the thing. This is the highest-value type, because the thread resolves in public whether the brand is present or not.

Reverse engineering. Copycat recipe threads are demand that couldn't be met through distribution. People don't reverse-engineer a product they can conveniently buy.

The San Francisco thread

This is the one I'd want on a Monday morning.

"I need to find the best banana pudding in san francisco. Went to Atlanta, had it for the first time, can't get enough… Where can I procure it here?"

Read what the crowd did with it. Magnolia comes up in four of those thirty comments, and only one of the four is someone actually recommending it. One says it can be shipped. One points out the recipe is easy to make at home. One notes the pudding uses instant Jell-O mix.

Meanwhile the thread names fifteen local alternatives: Smokin D's, Tartine, Sumac, Minnie Bell's, Gregory's in Oakland, Canyon Market, Fikscue, Rossotti's, Bi-Rite, Memphis Minnie's, Yes! Pudding, SusieCakes, Pudding by Pooja, Devil's Teeth and Banán. Seven separate commenters suggest skipping all of them and making it yourself.

"the magnolia bakery recipe is not that hard or expensive to make at home! my recommendation: make a 1/2 batch if you are serving less than 4"

So: a market with confirmed demand, no store, fifteen competitors named in public, and seven people talking the buyer out of purchasing anything at all. The recipe-hunting isn't a side note either. r/NYTCooking has two Magnolia banana pudding posts sitting at 299 and 314 votes. People reverse-engineer a product when they can't buy it.

None of that is measurable as share of voice. All of it is legible as a sentence, which is the same reason buying-intent signals on Reddit are findable at all.

What they'd also have caught, which isn't flattering

The same 35 a week surfaces things Magnolia would rather nobody repeated.

In July 2026 the Chicago location on North State Street had its license suspended and closed for about a week following a complaint inspection. The city's own inspection record is blunt about the reason: "OBSERVED AN INFESTATION OF 13- LIVE ROACHES," along with "APPX. 100 OR MORE LIVE SMALL FLIES" on, among other surfaces, the exterior of boxed bananas. It failed the re-inspection three days later with sixteen or more, passed on 21 July and reopened the same day. Block Club Chicago noted the location had failed three of its last five inspections.

That story is now the reflex association with the brand. Over the past month it surfaced unprompted in four unrelated subreddits: r/chicagofood ("Is that the one that just got busted for roaches?"), r/vegas ("Fair warning from Chicago"), r/randomquestions and r/bengaluru_speaks. A Vegas thread about three new locations planned for 2027 already carries Chicago warnings in the replies.

Separately, a TikTok from the creator Heath (@hkvondc), arguing the product declined after Magnolia was acquired by RSE Ventures, the investment firm co-founded by Hudson Yards developer Stephen Ross, got reposted to Reddit and pulled 4,700 upvotes and 822 comments. A longtime customer in that thread:

"Now, the stuff you buy in Grand Central is inedible. I thought they changed the recipe so the cupcakes wouldn't melt on the train, but it's everything and it's just awful."

None of that is a sentiment score. It's a reputation event travelling ahead of a store opening, in text, at a volume one person could read. It is also the clearest case I have seen for why monitoring and listening are different jobs: the individual roach comment is a mention, the fact that it now appears in four unrelated subreddits is a pattern.

Why nobody writes it this way

I went through the flagship social listening guides from Sprout, Brandwatch, Hootsuite, Talkwalker, Mention and Brand24. All six teach the same thing: share of voice, sentiment, brand health, crisis response.

Every one of those metrics is a ratio on mentions you already have. They tell an established brand how it's doing in the markets it's already in. Not one of the six frames listening as a way to answer where is there demand we aren't serving.

That's the gap - demand mapping.

The honest limitation

Everything above is Reddit and X. We don't cover Instagram or TikTok, and for a bakery that's most of the picture. The queue videos, the roach story and the private equity cake all started as short-form video and only echoed into text.

So this isn't the tool for Magnolia's social presence. But the specific job of finding unserved demand happens to be text-native. "I wish they shipped to Canada" is a sentence. Nobody films that.

If you want to run this yourself, the mechanism is two fields rather than a keyword list: Boolean terms, plus a short plain-language brief of what you actually want surfaced and what to skip, which is what each mention gets scored against. Reddit coverage includes comments as well as posts, which matters here, because every quote above is a comment rather than a post. For the wider set of options, including the platforms we don't cover, see our comparison of the best social listening tools in 2026.

The San Francisco thread is still open. Fifteen competitors named in it. Magnolia mentioned four times, and only once by someone recommending it.

FAQ

Can social listening work for a B2C brand?

For demand mapping, yes. For full brand health coverage, not on text platforms alone. A brand as well known as Magnolia Bakery generates roughly 35 text mentions a week, which one person can read, but most consumer conversation happens on Instagram and TikTok.

What is demand mapping?

Using public conversation to find markets where demand exists and distribution doesn't. It differs from brand monitoring in that it looks for mentions of the category alongside the absence of the product, rather than measuring mentions of the brand.

Why does sentiment analysis miss geographic demand?

Because a wish reads as neutral. "I wish they shipped to Canada" carries no complaint and no negative sentiment, so a sentiment-first workflow scores it as unremarkable and files it with the noise.

Are copycat recipe threads a buying signal?

They indicate unmet demand rather than immediate intent. A high-volume copycat thread means the product is desirable and inconvenient to obtain, which makes it a distribution signal more than a sales one.

Which platforms does SnitchFeed cover for this?

Reddit and Bluesky in real time. X, LinkedIn and Hacker News on a configurable scan interval, as often as hourly, defaulting to every 4 hours for X, 12 hours for LinkedIn and 2 hours for Hacker News. It doesn't cover Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, review sites or maps, so a consumer brand should treat it as a text-conversation tool rather than a complete social listening stack.
